The Avoid the Spark educational campaign to reduce battery safety incidents, will return to the Bay Area with local county battery collections, an event benefitting the California Fire Foundation, and the launch of the www.avoidthespark.com as a battery safety resource.
Avoid the Spark was initiated by nonprofit Call2Recycle last May, “spurred by the growing epidemic of battery-related fires at recycling and waste facilities along with the ‘hidden dangers’ of trashing lithium-based batteries”, an organization statement reads.
A recent California Product Stewardship Council survey reported that of 26 surveyed waste facilities from California, 83 percent had a fire at their facility and 65 percent of the reported fires were due to batteries.
“Through these partnerships, events, and educational resources, our goal is to shift consumer behavior away from trashing batteries to recycling them as a critical part of our environmental mission,” Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle, Inc. said.
