#HandsOffWHRDs: A Movement to Defend Human Rights Leaders in Latin America

During the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), happening from July 9 to July 18 in NYC, advocates took to Twitter using #HandsOffWHRDs, to shed light on the killings of women human rights defenders in Latin America.

The Women’s Major Group stated in a tweet that 2016 and 2017 were “some of the deadliest years for women’s human rights defenders (WHRDs) fighting on the frontline for environmental justice”.

According to a Global Witness report, 197 people were killed in 2017 for “standing up to the governments and companies that steal their land and harm the environment”.

In Colombia alone, 311 social leaders have been murdered between January 2016 and June 2018, according to the country’s Ombudsman’s Office.
