Undocumedia, an organization founded by activist dreamers Ivan Ceja and Justino Mora, strives to provide support, information, and calls to action for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.
Through their website and social media accounts (367K followers on Instagram), founded in 2012, Undocumedia has created a community among young Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, and a voice to tell their stories.
Even though the organization is led by dreamers, they pride themselves in also advocating for and supporting all undocumented immigrants and “the original dreamers”, their parents and those in their generation.
Among their many accomplishments, in recent weeks they have raised funds for DACA recipients who are eligible to apply for a renewal through United States Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), but can’t afford the $495+ application fees. The funds collected will be used for “distributing the funds and connecting DACA recipients with attorney representatives in the event that they are needed,” according to their YouCaring page.
Last week, they were able to raise funds for Francisco Luna, a dreamer who needed funds to get an emergency eye surgery. They raised $3,200+ in 30 minutes.
#UPDATE: Francisco is undergoing surgery today but he wanted you to know that he is thankful 🙏🏾☝🏾❤️ . . #UPDATE WE DID IT! TOGETHER WE DID IT IN RECORD TIME 👏🏾👏🏿👏🏼👏🏽👏🏻 🚨 👁 #ProudToGive20for20 “Our brother Francisco Luna is in desperate need of an emergency surgery to save the eyesight in his [right] eye, which is the only eye that he can still see with. He has lost the eyesight in his [left] eye. Francisco is an undocumented immigrant and DACA beneficiary living in Arizona. He has been a part of the immigrant rights movement and the greater fight for human rights for a number of years. Most recently, he spent weeks in Washington D.C. lobbying for the Dream Act. Today, we received an worrisome message from him: . . “I’m hanging by a thread. This morning I went to the ER (emergency room) as I had a pretty persistent shadow in my eye. I couldn’t see around the lower part of my vision area. In the ER they performed an ultrasound in which it was confirmed that my retina was tearing. The retina is the membrane around the back part of the eye and captures the images. Now I need an emergency surgery and it’s running about $4,000. I have $800, can you help me out with the rest? $20, $50, or $100 what ever you are able to do I appreciate it. It’s my only eye and don’t want to go blind yet.” . . #undocumented #immigrant #dreamer #daca #eyesight #help #support #donate #community
